KANLAON VOLCANO ERUPTION TODAY – PHIVOLCS reported a moderately explosive eruption on February 26, Thursday.
There is an ongoing moderately explosive eruption at the Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island, based on an update from the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Thursday night.
This latest volcanic activity began just before 7:30 PM and happened a week after it last erupted.
It furthered that they are continuing to monitor details surrounding the latest event and its possible impacts, with updates to be released as soon as they become available.
Exactly a week ago, Mount Kanlaon also had an explosive eruption that lasted for two minutes and produced a dark gray eruption plume that rose 2,000 meters above the crater before drifting southwest. Based on the volcano’s network of IP cameras, pyroclastic density currents flowed down the southern and southwestern upper slopes, reaching areas within one kilometer of the summit crater.
This eruption has caused ashfall and a sulfuric smell in 40 nearby villages, according to the report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. The ashfall and sulfuric smell reached communities in Bago City, Pontevedra, La Castellana, La Carlota City, Moises Padilla, Valladolid, and Hinigaran in Negros Occidental province.
A shockwave or vibration was also felt in La Castellana, Moises Padilla, Pontevedra, San Enrique, and Hinigaran during the explosion.
Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, indicating increased unrest.
PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone remains strictly prohibited.
Residents within the danger zone, as well as those living near rivers and streams draining the volcano, are urged to remain vigilant—especially during periods of heavy rainfall, when lahars may occur.
Civil aviation authorities have also been advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit.
