More personalities call out Bong Suntay for his remarks about Anne Curtis, which they consider foul and disrespectful.
ANNE CURTIS AND BONG SUNTAY – The issue involving them has caught the attention of many, including these celebrities.
The controversy centered on allegations that Quezon City 4th district Rep. Jesus “Bong” Suntay made inappropriate remarks toward Anne Curtis during a hearing. Many were offended, especially women, and what was even worse was when he insisted that the actress must take his words as compliments.
Many were in disbelief over his lack of accountability and how he simply made the remarks inside a respectable institution. As a lawmaker, he was expected to know the laws regarding this sensitive matter and uphold them. However, it appeared he did not see any problem in his repulsive remarks.
In a previous article, seasoned broadcaster Karen Davila and host Bianca Gonzalez reacted to the controversial remarks made at the start of the Women’s Month.
Davila expressed the irony of how someone who is regarded as a congressman, a representative of the people, paid by the people, a husband, and a father with daughters can say such remarks. She wrote, “Without the consciousness, knowledge or decency of how women should be talked about. Please keep your sick thoughts to yourself. More than striking his comments off the record, he should apologize. Women’s Month pa talaga.”
Gonzalez expressed her disgust over the remarks, and what was even more disgusting was when he said that the woman involved “should take it as a compliment.” For her, the failure to acknowledge that difference in perspective is what makes the incident even more troubling.
Nadine Lustre also reacted and reposted a post that said: “NAKAKAINIT TALAGA. Nakakainit ng ulo at ng dugo ang mga taong walang habas na ipinapangalandakan ang kabastusan sa mga kababaihan.”
Kapuso actress-TV host Gabbi Garcia was also disgusted. She stressed that objectifying women is unacceptable and added, “We are not here to be reduced to someone’s imagination. Nakakadiri.”
Anne’s co-host, Amy Perez, was disappointed over the remarks that had come from someone regarded as a public servant. She highlighted that the basic respect for women involves recognizing their inherent dignity, equality, and agency as human beings, not just polite courtesy.
She stressed that it does not include objectification or harassment.
Romnick Sarmenta also mocked how these kinds of politicians try to make things funny when, from the start, they were always the joke and not even funny in that sense.
John Lapus, disgusted, expressed, “Paka bastos! Diyos ko! Wag nyo na iboto yan!”
Pinky Webb also reacted, saying someone must file an ethics complaint. She stated, “I mean, the fact that Congresswoman [Ysabel Maria Zamora of San Juan] said, ‘I want that stricken out of the record,’ because she was obviously offended. And I’m sure a number of other women will be offended as well.”
Williard Cheng cited laws such as the Safe Spaces Act and the Anti-Catcalling Ordinance, which were enacted to prevent incidents like this. While Suntay may have viewed his statement as a simple remark, for the person on the receiving end, it could be considered disrespectful and offensive, making the entire situation a sensitive matter.
Alvin Elchico also expressed, “Ibig mong sabihin, you can prove a point without being offensive to women… May karapatan naman talaga kasi public servant sila.”
