Chinese Man Uses Hot Coffee to Fight Off Armed Robber in Tuguegarao City
A 57-year-old Chinese national showed quick thinking after using a cup of hot coffee to defend himself from an armed robber in Tuguegarao City.
On Wednesday morning (April 22, 2026), the victim was inside an establishment, calmly having his coffee, when someone called him and said that a person would be picking up vehicle parts. According to police, he went to open the gate of the building trusting the information.
As soon as the gate was opened, a 30-year-old suspect suddenly entered. The man pointed a gun at the victim and declared a hold-up. Instead of giving in, the victim reacted quickly. He threw his hot coffee straight at the suspect’s face, catching him off guard.

The unexpected move caused the suspect to panic. He immediately ran out of the gate and fled the scene. The victim then asked for help, which led to a quick response from authorities.
About 15 minutes later, the suspect was found and arrested while riding a tricycle. Police said the description given by the victim matched the suspect. When presented for identification, the victim was able to confirm his identity.
Authorities also recovered a homemade firearm with ammunition from the suspect. During questioning, the suspect claimed that he was only convinced by someone working at the establishment to carry out the robbery.
He said he was promised a large amount of money and was even picked up from Tuao and brought near the location. The gun was also reportedly given by the same accomplice.
The suspect is now under police custody and is facing charges for attempted robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.
