Indian Man Brings Sister’s Corpse to Bank as “Proof of Death” to Claim Money
An Indian man reportedly brought the body of his deceased sister to a bank to prove that she had already passed away.
The unusual incident happened in Odisha, India. According to reports, the woman had already been buried after she died from illness in January. She reportedly had around 19,000 rupees left in her bank account.
Wanting to claim the remaining money, the woman’s brother went to the bank and asked for assistance. However, bank employees explained that he needed to present proof that his sister had died before the savings could be released to him.
Because he did not fully understand the process, the man allegedly returned to the cemetery, dug up the body of his sister, and brought it to the bank as proof of death. The incident left both bank employees and people in the area shocked.
Authorities later explained that the man belongs to an indigenous tribe in India and did not have formal education. Because of this, he reportedly had difficulty understanding the legal procedures and documents required when claiming money from a deceased relative’s bank account.
Many people online reacted with sadness after learning about the situation. Some netizens said the incident showed the importance of proper guidance and education, especially for people living in remote communities who may not be familiar with official government or banking processes.
“This created a highly distressing situation at the premises,” the bank said.
Local authorities eventually stepped in to help the man process the needed documents so he could legally claim the remaining money left by his sister. They also assisted in returning the woman’s body to the cemetery for proper burial once again.
“The claim will be settled on priority, once the death certificate is submitted,” the bank added.
