Animal Advocates Criticize Alleged Abuse of Puppy in Legazpi City
Animal welfare groups and pet lovers criticized the alleged abuse of a stray puppy inside a private school campus in Legazpi City, Albay.
The incident reportedly happened at the campus of Divine Word College of Legazpi and quickly caught the attention of animal advocates from different areas in Bicol.
According to the Buhi Animal Welfare Society, the people who shared the video asked not to be identified for their own safety. In the footage, a security guard could allegedly be seen carrying a weak white puppy by the neck while walking around the campus grounds Observers noticed that the puppy already appeared tired and in poor condition.
Michelle Pineda, founder of Sorsogon Animal Rescue and Adoption or SARA, said witnesses claimed that the puppy had been kicked by the guard after it entered the school’s North Campus on the morning of April 28, 2026.
Reports also stated that the puppy was already injured even before the incident and had difficulty walking because of existing wounds. After being kicked, the frightened animal reportedly bit the guard’s foot before it was taken away from the area.
Members of SARA later visited the school’s high school department to verify what happened. Both sides agreed to hold a face-to-face meeting on May 6 with everyone involved in the incident.
The animal welfare groups expressed sadness over the puppy’s condition and disappearance. They stressed that stray animals should always be handled in a humane and proper manner.
Meanwhile, the school released an official statement acknowledging the reports but clarified that the allegations are still under investigation. The administration also emphasized its support for the Animal Welfare Act and condemned any form of cruelty toward animals.
The school promised to cooperate fully, review CCTV footage, and hold accountable for anyone proven responsible. As of this writing, the puppy’s location and condition remain unknown.
