71-Year-Old Corn Vendor Arrested for Selling Beside Street

A 71-year-old corn vendor was reportedly arrested for unauthorized selling along a roadside area in Matag-ob, Leyte.

Paulito Bayong, a senior citizen who earns a living by selling corn, has reportedly been relying on the small roadside business to support his daily needs. Like many small vendors, he spends his days trying to make enough income to provide for himself and his family.

According to reports, Bayong was selling in an area that was not approved for vending. The location was reportedly considered illegal because it lacked the necessary permit and was not designated as a legal selling area.

Matag-ob Mayor Bernie Tacoy explained that local authorities are required to enforce existing ordinances and regulations regarding the use of roadsides and public spaces. The mayor said that the action was taken because the vending spot violated local rules.

While local regulations are meant to maintain order and safety in public areas, some residents believe that the circumstances surrounding Bayong’s case should also be carefully examined.

Many are hoping for a clearer explanation regarding the specific ordinance that was allegedly violated, whether prior warnings were given, and what procedures were followed before authorities carried out the arrest.

The incident has also sparked discussions about finding a balance between enforcing the law and showing compassion to small vendors who depend on modest businesses for their livelihood.

For many observers, the incident is not only about roadside vending spot. It is also about an elderly man who continues to work hard despite his age to earn an honest living. Many netizens are asking whether rules can be enforced while still leaving room for understanding and consideration for people facing difficult circumstances.
