Police Officer Seriously Injured While Stopping Man Armed w/ Machete
A police officer lost one of his hands while responding to a disturbance involving a man armed with a machete in San Jose, Camarines Sur.
Police Staff Sergeant Noli Miraña was among the officers who went to a house in Barangay Calalahan after receiving a report about a man who was causing trouble and refusing to calm down. The officers initially tried to speak with the man and peacefully control the situation.
However, the situation turned violent when the suspect suddenly attacked Miraña with the machete.
Miraña tried to protect himself and used one of his hands to block the blow. The attack caused severe injuries and cut off one of his hands. He also suffered wounds to his face during the incident.
Seeing that their fellow officer was in danger, the other policemen were forced to shoot the suspect to stop the attack. The suspect was hit in the stomach and was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
Despite his serious injury, Miraña managed to overpower the wounded suspect and hold him down until his fellow officers could safely arrest him.
San Jose Police Station chief Police Major Glenn Loquias said the officers had initially gone to the area to calm the suspect and prevent the situation from getting worse.
Miraña was brought to a hospital, where doctors operated on him and successfully reattached his severed hand. He is now recovering from his injuries.
The suspect was found to have a previous alarm and scandal case. He is expected to face charges of frustrated murder and direct assault in connection with the attack.
The National Police Commission recognized Miraña’s bravery and sacrifice while performing his duty. The agency also assured that assistance would be provided to Miraña and his family during his recovery.
