No Filipinos Reported Missing as Nepal Flash Floods Leave 1,300 Unaccounted For
NEPAL FLASH FLOOD – The Philippine government has issued an update following the deadly Nepal flash floods, confirming that no Filipino has been reported among the victims or missing individuals.
The Philippine government has confirmed that no Filipino nationals are among those reported dead or missing following devastating flash floods and landslides along the border between Nepal and China.
Malacañang announced the development based on information provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), offering some relief to Filipino families who may have been concerned about relatives or travelers in the affected areas.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the initial information from the DFA indicates that no Filipinos have been identified among the casualties or missing individuals following the disaster.
The flash floods and landslides have caused widespread destruction in several communities, with authorities continuing search and rescue operations amid difficult conditions.
According to preliminary reports, at least 165 people have died after massive debris flows swept through multiple communities. More than 1,300 people have also been reported missing, with many of them believed to be foreign tourists who were in the area when the disaster struck.
The United States Geological Survey believes that a “glacial collapse” may have triggered the devastating flash floods and landslides. The sudden release of water and debris resulted in powerful flows that overwhelmed rivers and surrounding communities.
Among the hardest-hit waterways were the Bhote Kushi River and the Trishuli River. A massive mixture of water and mud reportedly overflowed from the rivers, carrying debris and causing destruction across affected areas.
Authorities have recovered 162 bodies from locations near the two rivers as rescue teams continue to search for survivors and missing individuals.
Meanwhile, three additional bodies were recovered at Gyirong Port in Tibet, adding to the growing number of fatalities linked to the disaster.
The high number of missing people has raised concerns, particularly because many foreign tourists were reportedly in the affected region. Search and rescue teams are expected to continue working through challenging terrain and potentially hazardous conditions as they attempt to locate those still unaccounted for.
For the Philippines, the DFA’s latest information that no Filipinos are among those reported dead or missing provides some reassurance. However, officials are expected to continue monitoring the situation and coordinating with authorities as more information becomes available.
The disaster highlights the unpredictable and destructive nature of flash floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions where sudden geological and environmental events can quickly endanger communities and travelers.
