Floodwaters Hide Open Manhole, Claim Life of 25-Year-Old Man in Pampanga
A 25-year-old man died after falling into an open manhole submerged in floodwaters in Barangay Cutcut, Angeles City, Pampanga.
The incident happened Friday afternoon along Friendship Highway and was captured on CCTV. The footage showed the man walking along the flooded road before suddenly falling into the open manhole, which was hidden by the deep floodwater.
People nearby who witnessed the incident immediately tried to rescue him. However, they were unable to reach him because of the strong water current and dangerous conditions. Witnesses said the man likely did not see the open manhole because it was completely covered by the floodwaters.
The victim’s body was found about an hour later, several meters away from the drainage where he fell. The strong current apparently carried him away from the area. His remains were later brought to Makati City for burial.
The incident highlights the serious dangers posed by flooding, especially when open manholes, drainage systems, and other hazards are hidden underwater. Roads that appear safe can become extremely dangerous when floodwaters rise and cover areas that are normally visible.
The tragedy also raised concerns about the need to secure open manholes and drainage systems, particularly in areas that are prone to flooding. Authorities are expected to ensure that dangerous areas are properly marked or blocked off to protect residents and motorists during severe weather.
The incident happened as heavy rains caused widespread flooding in parts of Pampanga and other areas of the country. Many communities have been dealing with rising floodwaters, damaged roads, and difficult travel conditions.
GMA News reported that it had contacted the barangay officials and the Angeles City Police for their statements and an official incident report. However, authorities had not yet responded at the time of reporting.
The man’s death serves as a reminder of how dangerous floodwaters can be. Beyond the risk of drowning, submerged roads may conceal open manholes, deep drainage systems, damaged pavement, and other hazards that can quickly lead to serious accidents.
Residents are urged to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas whenever possible, especially when the depth and condition of the road cannot be clearly seen.
