South Cotabato Governor Says Student Involved in Banga National High School Shooting Allegedly Member of Online Violence Group
South Cotabato Governor said the student involved in the shooting at Banga National High School was allegedly a member of an online group related to violence.
South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo said investigators are now examining whether the student’s alleged involvement in the online community had any connection to the tragic incident that took place on Friday afternoon (September 18, 2026).
According to the governor, this is one of the angles being explored as authorities continue their investigation.
Based on the initial findings shared by local officials, the student reportedly shot several people inside the school before later turning the gun on himself. Investigators have also spoken with the suspect’s close friend, who reportedly informed authorities about the student’s alleged participation in an online group that focused on violence.
Police are now working to determine the nature of the group and whether its content may have influenced the student in any way.
Officials stressed that the investigation is still ongoing and that many details have yet to be confirmed. Authorities are carefully reviewing available evidence to better understand what led to the incident.
Meanwhile, different reports have emerged regarding the number of casualties. According to information shared by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), six students lost their lives while 17 others were injured during the shooting.
The students were sent home to help them recover from the emotional shock caused by the incident. Local officials also expressed deep sadness over what happened, especially since the violence occurred inside a school where students were expected to be safe.
Governor Tamayo also reminded parents to keep firearms secured and out of the reach of children. He emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The provincial government has assured the public that it will continue working with law enforcement agencies and other concerned groups to strengthen safety measures and help prevent similar incidents.
