Man in Quezon City Drowns After Saving Mother & 2 Children From Floodwaters
A 41-year-old man lost his life after helping save a mother and her two young children from strong floodwaters in Quezon City.
The victim, identified as Jerland Enriquez, was reported missing for more than three days before his body was found on the morning of September 24 in a section of the San Francisco River within Barangay Damayan.
According to local officials, heavy rains caused flooding in the area, especially near a creek in Barangay Unang Sigaw where Enriquez lived. During the flooding, he noticed a woman and her two children struggling against the strong current. Without hesitation, he rushed to help them.
The mother, Jean Rose Reyes, and her children, aged 2 and 4, were eventually rescued. Reyes described Enriquez as a kind and generous person who was always willing to help others, even when he had little for himself. She credited him for saving their lives during the terrifying incident.
Reyes and her children suffered injuries after being hit by pieces of wood and debris while being carried by the rushing water. They were also exposed to other dangers brought by the flood, making their survival even more remarkable.
Family members of Enriquez were devastated by the loss. His brother shared that the tragic news had already been relayed to his wife and two children. Relatives remembered him as a caring and selfless person who often helped and shared what he had with others.
Originally from Nueva Ecija, Enriquez worked in Manila as a fruit loader to support his family. Those who knew him described him as hardworking and compassionate, qualities that were reflected in his final act of courage.
Local government officials have expressed their willingness to assist in bringing his remains back to his home province and helping with his burial.
