Authorities Arrest 67-Year-Old Taxi Driver for Allegedly Molesting Minor Passenger
A 67-year-old taxi driver was arrested after he allegedly molested a minor passenger during a trip to La Paz, Iloilo City.
The suspect was identified by police as Antonio Cahiben, also known as “Bato,” a widower and resident of Barangay Guzman-Jesena in Mandurriao. Authorities said he has been working as a taxi driver for about 11 years before becoming involved in the incident.
On Sunday morning, September 27, 2026, the minor passenger boarded the taxi in Villa, Arevalo and was on her way to Barangay Gustilo in La Paz. During the trip, the girl reportedly borrowed the driver’s cellphone because she needed to make a call. As they traveled, the passenger allegedly shared some personal problems with the driver.
Police said the driver later admitted that he tried to comfort the passenger. However, the situation allegedly crossed the line when he touched parts of the girl’s body without her consent. The inappropriate contact reportedly continued while they were inside the vehicle.
Authorities said the suspect claimed the passenger did not immediately complain, which he took as a reason to continue his actions. The alleged incident ended when they arrived in Barangay Gustilo.
Upon reaching the destination, barangay officials were informed about what had happened. The officials immediately responded and coordinated with the police. The taxi driver was then taken into custody for questioning.
During the investigation, the suspect reportedly apologized to the victim and admitted that he failed to control himself. His statements have become part of the ongoing case being handled by authorities.
According to PMaj. Sonny Boy Garnace, chief of the La Paz Police Station, the suspect is expected to face a charge of Acts of Lasciviousness.
Police reminded the public, especially parents and guardians, to immediately report any form of abuse involving minors so that proper action can be taken and victims can receive protection and support.
