Sherwin Gatchalian Reveals Loren Legarda Is Seeking Extension of Medical Leave

LOREN LEGARDA – Senator Loren Legarda could be staying away from Senate proceedings longer as she continues to deal with a serious medical condition.

Senator Loren Legarda’s camp is requesting an extension of her medical leave, according to Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian on Wednesday. “Nagpapadala sila ng extension for medical leave,” Gatchalian told GMA News’ Unang Balita when asked about Legarda’s expected return following the expiration of her current leave on Friday.

He explained that Legarda remains focused on receiving medical attention and getting sufficient rest while dealing with a serious health condition.

“Sa pagkakaalam ko, nagpapatingin at nagpapahinga si Senator Loren. Sabi ko sa mga unang interview na bago siya nag-file ng medical leave, nakapag-usap kami at sabi niya meron siyang medical condition na seryoso at ito yung kanyang parte ng kanyang pagtitingin dito sa seryosong sakit niya,” Gatchalian said.

Legarda has been on medical leave since August 3. Her most recent appearance at the Senate was on July 29, when she attended a plenary session.

Her spokesperson, Atty. Tony La Viña, previously disclosed that the senator was undergoing treatment in France for a lung-related illness and an autoimmune condition. He also said Legarda needed time to recover because stress and tension could worsen her health condition.

The request for an extended medical leave comes as the Senate continues preparations for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Legarda’s absence has also raised questions about whether she would be able to participate in the eventual voting on the case.

Gatchalian clarified that Legarda would still be permitted to vote if she returns to the Senate and is physically present when the senators cast their votes.

He noted that the Senate had already established guidelines regarding which members would be considered eligible to participate in the final judgment of an impeachment case.

Under the rules agreed upon by the senators, those who were absent from the trial and did not hear the witnesses would not be included among those qualified to vote on the final decision.

For now, Legarda’s possible return remains uncertain as her camp seeks additional time for her medical leave. The senator’s health situation will determine when she can resume her duties and take part in Senate proceedings, including the impeachment trial.
