Doctor Sustains Injuries During Police Shooting After Alleged Hit-and-Run
A 29-year-old doctor was seriously wounded after police officers shot at his vehicle following an alleged hit-and-run incident in La Paz, Iloilo City.
On early Sunday morning, October 11, 2026. the doctor, identified as alias Pao, a resident of Jaro district, reportedly hit a small store and a tricycle in Barangay Baldoza before driving away toward Barangay Caingin.
According to Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) Director Police Colonel Wilbert Parilla, a barangay tanod reported the incident to the police. Another call was also made to the 911 emergency hotline, prompting officers to respond and search for the vehicle.
When police officers caught up with the doctor, they approached his vehicle and ordered him to step out. However, according to the responding officers, he continued driving instead of following their instructions. Police claimed that the vehicle nearly hit them, prompting them to open fire.
Investigators recovered 11 empty bullet casings scattered along the road. Bullet fragments were also found inside the doctor’s vehicle, which had several bullet holes in different areas, including multiple marks on the right side of the windshield.
The doctor sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and underwent surgery at Iloilo St. Paul’s Hospital. He was later transferred to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further treatment.
Parilla said the police could not yet provide a complete account of the shooting because investigators had not been able to interview the doctor while he was receiving medical care.
Meanwhile, the three police officers involved in the shooting were immediately placed under administrative relief as part of standard operating procedures. Their firearms were turned over to the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) for examination.
The three officers were also removed from patrol duty and reassigned to the ICPO’s Holding and Accounting Unit while the investigation continues.
Authorities are expected to gather more information to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate actions based on the findings.
