Rovelyn Baterbonia Sets New Rules for Visits to Late Son’s Grave
Rovelyn Baterbonia has prohibited the public from taking photos and videos at the grave of her late son, Rene Baterbonia, a former Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball player. The decision comes as the family prepares to build a small structure over his grave, starting Tuesday, October 13.
In a Facebook post on Monday, October 12, Rovelyn announced the new rule and asked the public, especially vloggers, to respect their family’s privacy during the construction. She also clarified that only the family and the Municipal Information Office of the local government of Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, would be allowed to share updates about the grave.
Rovelyn stressed that visitors are still welcome to pay their respects to her son. However, she asked them to avoid taking pictures or recording videos directly at the burial site. She expressed hope that the public would understand their request and respect the family’s wishes.

The Baterbonia family also thanked those who continue to visit and remember Rene despite the restrictions on taking photos and videos.
Rene passed away on June 8, 2026, during a team-building activity involving the Ateneo men’s basketball team in Dipaculao, Aurora. His death also claimed the life of fellow student-athlete Divine Adili.

Rene’s passing drew attention because of his connection to the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball program and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Since his death, people have continued to visit his grave and share updates about it on social media.
With the planned construction and the new restrictions, the family hopes to manage updates about the burial site while allowing visitors to pay their respects in person. The request is intended to protect their privacy as they continue to mourn Rene’s loss.
