Netizens Urge Phillip Salvador to Defend Son Josh Aquino
Netizens are calling on actor Phillip Salvador to defend his son, Josh Aquino, following the backlash over offensive remarks made by the hosts of the Machong Chismisan podcast about his disability.
The controversy began with an episode titled Ang Pagbabalik Ni Kris Aquino, in which the hosts mocked Josh and compared him with his younger brother, Bimby. Their remarks drew widespread criticism from netizens and public figures who said the comments were disrespectful toward persons with disabilities (PWDs).
On GMA News’ Facebook post about Mark Leviste, Kris Aquino’s former boyfriend who defended Josh, netizens questioned Phillip’s silence. They noted that several celebrities had spoken up for Josh while his father had yet to issue a public statement. Some also criticized Phillip over his alleged lack of financial support for his son.
Other netizens praised television host Boy Abunda for quickly condemning the podcast’s remarks. They expressed disappointment that Phillip had not publicly defended Josh despite the growing controversy. Some also warned the podcast hosts that Phillip might respond to the issue.
Following the backlash, Machong Chismisan removed the controversial episode and apologized to those offended, the PWD community, and the individuals mentioned in the discussion. The Pod Network also terminated its contract with the podcast.
Several celebrities, including Michael Leyva, Boy Abunda, Dingdong Dantes, and Aiko Melendez, have expressed support for Josh and criticized the hosts’ remarks. Lawmakers and advocacy groups have also condemned the comments, adding to calls for greater respect toward persons with disabilities.
The controversy has sparked discussions about online responsibility and the treatment of people with disabilities. Netizens continue to question Phillip’s silence as more public figures speak out in support of Josh.
