Hospitals on Alert as DOH Prepares for Possible El Niño Patient Surge

EL NIÑO – From heat exhaustion to respiratory complications, the possible health effects of El Niño have prompted the DOH to prepare for an increase in hospital consultations.

The Department of Health (DOH) is preparing hospitals for a possible increase in patients suffering from heat-related illnesses as the effects of El Niño intensify. As part of its preparations, the agency is considering the temporary reassignment of hospital personnel from other departments to ensure that patients receive timely medical attention during periods of increased demand.

DOH Assistant Secretary Tagumpay Maniquis said hospitals could implement a surge plan that allows them to mobilize additional personnel whenever the number of patients rises.

“We have a surge plan for this. There are hospital personnel we can assign for this kind of situation,” Maniquis said. “If early on, we can see the trend, we can activate the surge plan.”

Through this measure, hospitals can respond more effectively to an increase in consultations and emergency cases associated with extreme heat. Early detection of a rising number of patients would also help health facilities determine when additional staffing is necessary.

Maniquis explained that the DOH is monitoring not only heat exhaustion and heat stroke but also other medical conditions that could worsen during periods of high temperatures.

These include asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respiratory conditions that may require medical attention when environmental conditions aggravate existing symptoms.

Earlier, the DOH announced plans to establish dedicated fast lanes in hospital emergency rooms for individuals experiencing heat-related illnesses. The initiative aims to help affected patients receive faster assessment and treatment as El Niño conditions become more intense.

Hospitals have likewise been directed to prepare for a potential rise in emergency room consultations. They are expected to activate the designated lanes when necessary to accommodate patients who require immediate attention due to heat exposure.

The preparations form part of the government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare services and ensure hospitals can handle additional medical cases during prolonged periods of extreme heat.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reminded workers that those who suffer heat-related injuries while performing their duties may seek compensation through the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC).

The compensation program provides a possible avenue for eligible employees to obtain benefits for work-related injuries or illnesses, subject to applicable requirements.

Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of preparedness as rising temperatures may place additional pressure on healthcare facilities and increase risks to workers and vulnerable members of the public.

With hospitals preparing additional personnel and emergency room arrangements, the DOH aims to ensure that patients affected by extreme heat can access appropriate medical care when needed.
