Cardinal Tagle expresses appreciation for them.
Many Filipinos hoped for Cardinal Tagle to be the new pope, and the Filipino cardinal has this to say about it.
Before a new pope was named, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and other cardinals, such as Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Cardinal Peter Erdo, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Cardinal Peter Turkson, Cardinal Sergio da Rocha, Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonca, Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, and Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, composed the list of potential successors to the pope.

Filipinos hoped for the new pope to come from the Philippines, but the conclave has decided. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is the new pope who chose to be called Pope Leo XIV.
With the conclusion of the papal conclave, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula, Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David, and Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Manila Luis Antonio Tagle were filled with a sense of awe and humility.
During a press conference held at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino in Rome, the three electors spoke about their experience. This is Tagle’s second conclave, and he shared, “Yung Prevost parang hindi kilala, pero yung narinig na yung Leo, [nagsigawan na], ‘Leo! Leo! Leo!’ So kita natin, pati sa sentimiyento ng mga tao, hindi namin kilala itong taong ito, pero siya yung Papa.”
He is also thankful to those who had faith in him and believed in his potential as a candidate for papacy. He did not imagine himself being the pope, but he is grateful to those who had hoped and trusted him.
The selection was holy and solemn, and they did it not for someone or against anyone. The approach is different from worldly affairs. The affair is governed by principles relying on the Holy Spirit and prayers.
“Kaya yung pagsinabing we rely on the Holy Spirit at ang through prayer, disiplinado dapat kaming lahat na hindi isipin o magpadala na kandidatong ako. Yung gano’ng internal discipline ay kailangan,” he shared.
