EcoWaste Coalition to Candidates After Election “The least they can do is clean it up”
The EcoWaste Coalition is calling on all candidates from the recent election to cleanup their campaign mess.
The group is urging the political candidates take responsibility for their campaign materials and help clean up the mess left behind. They reminded candidates that their duty doesn’t end after election day.
“This isn’t just about picking up trash. It is about setting the tone for responsible leadership… Candidates should not disappear after election day,” EcoWaste Coalition Cris Lague said.

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, EcoWaste released a statement pointing out that it has become a recurring problem every election season that streets filled with posters, tarpaulins, and flyers from candidates who are no longer visible after the polls.
These campaign materials often turn into garbage that clutters communities and harms the environment.
The group stressed that cleaning up after an election is not just about removing trash. It reflects the kind of leadership candidates promote. Leaving behind waste shows carelessness, while taking action shows accountability and respect for the community.

According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), around 6.1 tons of waste were collected during the election period on Monday, May 12, 2025. Most of it came from campaign posters and other materials scattered around public spaces.
Some local government units have already begun cleaning operations. The Commission on Elections (Comelec), through its Task Force Baklas, is also helping remove remaining campaign materials from public areas.

The EcoWaste Coalition encourages all candidates, whether they won or lost, to take part in the cleanup efforts. By doing so, they show they care not just about winning votes but also about protecting the environment and showing real leadership.
“This cycle of waste and neglect has to end… If candidates truly want to lead, they must show that they can also clean up after themselves and protect the environment while doing so,” the group stated.
