Vice Pres. Sara Duterte Willing To Author Law on Political Dynasty
SARA DUTERTE – The Vice President expressed her willingness to write a law against political dynasty in the Philippines.
The Philippine government is undeniably faced with several situations of people belonging to the same family holding elected positions. It is no longer a strange situation or something unexpected when a husband or wife, child, sibling, or nephew or niece of an incumbent official runs and wins a public office.
Undeniably, in the Philippines, one of the families who occupy several positions in the government is the Duterte. All the children of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte who was just elected as Davao City Mayor occupy positions in the government.
The brothers of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte both hold positions in Davao — her older brother, Paolo Duterte, as the representative of the city’s first district and her youngest brother, Baste Duterte, as the outgoing city mayor.
Cong. Paolo Duterte won his reelection bid as Davao City first district representative. Mayor Baste Duterte is also set to serve Davao as its Vice Mayor. Omar Duterte, the eldest grandson of former Pres. Duterte and son of Congressman Pulong, is also set to join his father in the House of Representatives as the city’s second district representative.
Amid coming from a political dynasty, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte claimed she will support an anti-political dynasty law. Based on a post on ABS-CBN News, during an interview, the Vice President claimed that she is the most credible to speak about the issue citing that she came from a family with several members holding elected positions in the country.
“Ako ‘yung may pinaka malaking at solid ang kredibilidad to speak about political dynasty because I come from a political dynasty so wala ng mas matindi pang experts sa political dynasty. Ako ‘yun,” she said.
Vice Pres. Sara Duterte reiterated her campaign to the people not to vote based on surnames. She also stressed that the voters should ask first about the capacity and capabilities of a candidate.
“I’m campaigning about us selecting people automatically based on their family affiliation. We should ask the person first — ‘Okay, Duterte ka. Ano ba ang kredibilidad mo? Ano ba ang kapasidad mo? Okay Marcos ka. Ano ba ang abilidad mo? Ano ba ang kapasidad mo?’” she said.
The Vice President stressed that the vote for the family members of an incumbent government official should not come automatically. According to her, questioning is the most that we can do to check the competence of the candidate.
“Hindi automatic ‘yun na parang pag anak, asawa, kapatid, pamangkin, automatic. That is the most that we can do as voters, question the capacity and the competence of the candidate,” Duterte said.
During the interview, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte claimed she will support the law against political dynasty. Based on the post, she even stressed that she can be the one to write the anti-political dynasty law.
“Suportahan ko ba ang batas ng anti-political dynasty? Yes. Bibigyan nila ako ng pagkakataon na sumulat ako ‘yung susulat, ako ‘yung pinakamagaling sa political dynasty… ‘pag binigyan ninyo ako ng chance na sumulat, ako susulat,” Duterte said.
Amid her disappointment over the 2025 Election results, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte called on the Filipinos to help build a powerful opposition.
