Teenager Drowns in Cebu After Diving for a Cellphone Promised ₱1,000 Reward
DROWN – What began as a simple offer to find a cellphone turned heartbreaking when a 15-year-old boy drowned during the search in Cebu.
A 15-year-old boy tragically lost his life after drowning while searching for an allegedly misplaced cellphone in San Remigio, Cebu. The teenager reportedly agreed to dive into the water after being offered a ₱1,000 reward for recovering the device.
According to reports, the victim was with three friends who were reportedly fishing when a man believed to be around 23 years old approached them. The man allegedly asked the group to help search for his cellphone, which he claimed had fallen into the water.
The victim and his friends reportedly agreed to look for the missing device after being promised a ₱1,000 reward if they successfully recovered it.
The teenagers then began diving into the water in an attempt to locate the cellphone. However, after several minutes, the victim suddenly disappeared from the view of his friends.
Alarmed by what had happened, the victim’s companions immediately sought assistance and contacted authorities. A search and rescue operation was quickly launched by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to locate the missing teenager.
Despite the efforts of rescuers, the victim was eventually recovered near a pier. Unfortunately, he was already lifeless when his body was found.
The incident has since raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s decision to dive into the water for the cellphone. Questions are also being raised about the man who allegedly offered the reward and asked the teenagers to retrieve his missing device.
Authorities have reportedly begun a deeper investigation into the incident, particularly focusing on the role of the man who allegedly requested the search and offered the ₱1,000 reward.
The tragedy serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers involved in entering unfamiliar or potentially hazardous waters, especially for minors. What began as an attempt to earn a small reward ultimately ended in the loss of a young life.
Authorities are expected to continue gathering statements from the victim’s friends and other witnesses to establish exactly what happened before, during, and after the teenager entered the water.
