Man Burns Own Room After Stress From Unpaid Rent, Damaged Nearby Boarding Houses
A man reportedly burned his own room after feeling stressed about his unpaid rent, which also damaged nearby boarding houses.
A man in Puerto Princesa is now under police custody after he allegedly set fire to the room he was renting, causing a blaze that damaged around eight houses in Manalo Extension, Purok Marikit, Barangay Milagrosa.
The incident left several families shaken as flames quickly spread through the tightly built homes.
According to authorities, the suspect, identified as Erdivino Panday, admitted that he started the fire himself. During an interview, he explained that he had been under heavy stress because he had not been able to pay rent for four months.
Panday said he was already being told to leave the boarding house, and in a moment of frustration and pressure, he burned his room using gasoline.
Some residents recalled seeing him packing his belongings around midnight, which now makes more sense following his confession.
The fire damaged numerous homes, leaving families to deal with losses they never expected. Many residents were left with little time to save their belongings. In the aftermath, neighbors helped one another gather what remained and offered comfort to those most affected.
Authorities are now preparing charges against the suspect, who will face a case of arson. Police officers also reminded the public that no matter how stressful or difficult a situation becomes, harming others or damaging property is never a solution.
The incident brought both fear and heartbreak, especially since it happened before the holiday season. Local officials and community members are now working together to help those who lost their homes, hoping to help them rebuild and recover after the tragedy.
