Taxi Operator Summoned by LTFRB Over Alleged Scam Attempt on K-Pop Idol Soobin

A taxi operator in Cebu has been called out by authorities after an alleged attempt to scam K-pop idol Choi Soobin.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board issued a show cause order against the taxi operator to explain why their franchise should not be canceled. The issue quickly gained attention and raised concerns about tourist safety in the country.

As part of the order, the operator was also directed to surrender the taxi’s license plate and the driver’s license.

According to LTFRB Chairperson Vigor Mendoza II, the alleged act does not reflect the values of Filipinos. He stressed that such behavior harms the country’s image, especially when it involves a popular international figure.

“Hindi ito ugali ng Pilipino, ugali ito ng mga walang hiya. At huwag ninyong idadahilan ang kahirapan dito dahil napakaraming kababayan natin na lumalaban ng patas at hindi nanggugulang ng kapwa,” Mendoza said.

Initial findings from the LTFRB in Central Visayas showed that the driver may have overcharged and failed to use the taxi meter. Reports said that Soobin, a member of the K-pop group Tomorrow X Together, was asked to pay a high fare of around P1,000 for a ride from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to his hotel while he was on vacation in the Philippines.

The taxi unit has been placed under a 30-day suspension. Authorities are now reviewing the case and considering stricter rules, including possible criminal charges and impounding vehicles involved in similar incidents.

The LTFRB has given the operator a chance to submit a written explanation. A hearing has been scheduled for April 21 to further review the case.

The situation has reminded both drivers and operators to follow proper rules and treat passengers fairly, especially as the country continues to welcome local and international visitors.

The social media users expressed their reactions to the incident
