42 Sacks of Trash Left Behind at Mount Banahaw After Holy Week
42 sacks of trash were collected in a cleanup drive at Mount Banahaw in Barangay Kinabuhayan, Dolores, Quezon, after the observance of Holy Week.
Thousands of devotees and tourists visited Mount Banahaw during Holy Week, but the large number of visitors also left around 42 sacks of trash. The garbages were collected in a cleanup drive.
The cleanup was led by the Protected Area Management Office, which monitors and protects the area. Barangay Kinabuhayan is known as one of the main entry points for pilgrims heading to the mountain, especially during religious events like Holy Week.
Despite repeated reminders from authorities, many visitors failed to properly dispose of their waste. Plastic wrappers, bottles, and other garbage were found scattered along the trails and resting areas.
The garbage waste disappointed local officials and environmental workers who have been trying to preserve the natural beauty and spiritual value of the place.
Before Holy Week, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources already encouraged visitors to bring their own trash bags and take their waste home. The reminder aimed to reduce pollution and protect the mountain, which is considered sacred by many.
Dolores Mayor Orlan Calayag also stressed the importance of keeping the area clean as a sign of respect not only for the environment but also for the community and its traditions.
Mount Banahaw has long been known as a spiritual sanctuary. In 2004, parts of the mountain were closed to allow the environment to recover from heavy damage caused by too many visitors. Up to now, access remains limited to certain areas to prevent further harm.
