Motorcycle Taxi Rider Passes Away While Waiting in Line for P5,000 Fuel Subsidy

A motorcycle taxi rider collapsed and later died while waiting in line for financial assistance at Quezon City Memorial Circle.

The 44-year-old rider had been lining up early in the morning to receive a P5,000 fuel subsidy provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Long lines had already formed before sunrise, as thousands of riders gathered at payout sites across Metro Manila.

According to reports, the rider suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed while standing in line under the heat of the sun. It was suspected that he suffered a heart attack, worsened by the high temperature and exhaustion.

Emergency responders quickly gave first aid and performed CPR, but he showed no signs of recovery. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Many riders in the area were seen using pieces of cardboard and umbrellas to shield themselves from the intense heat while waiting for their turn. The large crowd and long hours of waiting made the situation even more difficult.

The DSWD immediately reached out to the rider’s family to provide assistance. Support was given for hospital expenses, funeral arrangements, transportation, and even the education of his child.

The agency also expressed sympathy and assured the family that they would not be left alone during this difficult time.

On that day, more than 17,000 riders went to different payout sites to claim the cash aid, which was given due to rising fuel prices. The manual distribution process was meant to ensure that only qualified beneficiaries would receive assistance.

Authorities are now studying a digital system to make the process faster and safer, and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
