Fire Volunteer Battles Fire in the Community Only to Become a Victim Himself

FIRE VOLUNTEER – He was supposed to be saving homes from the flames, but this fire volunteer arrived at the scene only to learn that his own two-story house was already gone.

A fire volunteer who rushed to help battle a blaze in Barangay Gen. T. de Leon, Caloocan City, in the early hours of Monday, August 17, 2026, faced a heartbreaking discovery when he learned that his own home had also been consumed by the fire.

The volunteer was among those who responded to the fire, unaware that his own two-story residence had become one of the properties affected by the flames. During an interview with the media, he recalled repeatedly praying as their group traveled toward the area to respond to the emergency.

He said he kept praying that the fire would not reach their home. However, when they arrived near their community, several neighbors immediately approached him and told him that the fire had already engulfed their house.

“Wala na po. Ubos na po yung bahay namin,” he told the media.

For the volunteer, the incident was especially painful because helping people during fires had already become part of his service to the community. He had responded to several emergencies in the past and willingly put himself at risk to help others.

But this time, he was forced to witness the destruction of the very place he called home.

“Napakasakit sa part na ikaw mismo, fire volunteer, ang nasunugan,” he added.

Despite the devastating loss, the volunteer said he was grateful that his family, particularly his children, remained safe and that nobody was injured in the incident.

Unfortunately, the fire destroyed all of their belongings inside the house. The family was unable to save anything from their residence, leaving them to face the difficult task of starting over.

The incident serves as a painful reminder that even those who regularly respond to emergencies can become victims themselves. For this fire volunteer, however, the tragedy has not erased his commitment to helping others.

Despite losing their home and possessions, he remains determined to rebuild his life and continue serving his community.

His story highlights not only the risks faced by fire volunteers but also their dedication to helping others, even when they themselves may be vulnerable to the same dangers they work to prevent.
