PNP Logs 50 School Incidents Across the Philippines Since June
SCHOOL INCIDENTS – A total of 50 school incidents involving children in conflict with the law have been documented by the PNP from June 16 to August 19.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has documented at least 50 incidents in schools involving children in conflict with the law (CICL) from June 16 to August 19, highlighting renewed concerns over safety in educational institutions.
According to figures released by the PNP Public Information Office (PIO), bomb threats accounted for the largest portion of the recorded cases, with 26 alleged incidents reported during the period. These were followed by 12 alleged shooting threats.
The police data also included four stabbing incidents and four cases involving the arrest of minors for allegedly possessing firearms illegally. In addition, authorities recorded two shooting incidents and two death threats.
The PNP PIO, however, did not immediately provide details regarding the specific locations where the incidents took place.
The figures came amid heightened public concern about security in schools following two fatal shooting incidents involving educational institutions. On June 22, a fatal shooting occurred at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City. More recently, another deadly shooting was reported on August 18 at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School in Zamboanga City.
The incidents have prompted renewed discussions about how schools can strengthen security measures and protect students, teachers, and other members of the academic community.
Following the August 18 incident in Zamboanga City, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said his department was considering a review of its existing policies on security measures for educational institutions. The possible review would also look into extending such security considerations to private schools.
The PNP data covers a period that began shortly after the opening of the current school year. Under the Department of Education’s official calendar, School Year 2026–2027 started on June 8.
With the number of reported threats and violent incidents involving minors continuing to draw attention, authorities and schools face growing pressure to ensure that educational institutions remain secure environments for children and school personnel.
The latest figures underscore the importance of continued coordination between law enforcement agencies, school administrators, parents, and communities in addressing threats and preventing violence within and around school campuses.
