Bongbong Marcos Calls on Filipinos to Draw Strength From Ninoy Aquino’s Courage
NINOY AQUINO – Decades after his assassination, Ninoy Aquino’s courage remains a powerful symbol of standing firm for freedom and democracy.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to draw inspiration from the life, courage, and legacy of the late senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. as the country commemorates Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21.
In his message, Marcos highlighted Aquino’s determination to stand by his principles and encouraged Filipinos to protect their freedom while working toward a more progressive nation. He said Aquino’s legacy serves as a reminder of the courage required to uphold one’s beliefs and participate actively in the country’s democratic processes.

The president also emphasized the importance of living with honor and dignity, particularly as Filipinos continue to face challenges affecting democracy and national unity.
“Ninoy Aquino Day, therefore, invites us to acknowledge the past and draw from it the resolve needed to safeguard freedom, strengthen our institutions, and deepen national unity,” Marcos said in a social media post.
Aquino was among the most prominent critics of the dictatorship under Marcos’ father and namesake, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. His assassination on August 21, 1983, at the then-Manila International Airport became a defining moment in Philippine history.
Aquino had returned to the Philippines from the United States when he was killed. His death sparked widespread outrage and strengthened opposition to the Marcos Sr. administration. The event eventually became one of the major developments that contributed to the historic 1986 People Power Revolution, which ended the dictatorship.

More than four decades after Aquino’s death, Marcos said Philippine democracy continues to encounter various challenges. These include disinformation, declining public trust, and civic indifference, or the lack of interest among citizens in social and government concerns.
“Ninoy’s legacy encourages us to meet these challenges with vigilance and faith in the Filipino people as we work together to deliver meaningful progress for all,” he added.
Marcos also vowed that his administration would continue protecting the country’s sovereignty and ensuring that Filipinos have equal opportunities.
“Together, let us carry forward the lessons of our history as we continue to nurture a more peaceful and prosperous Bagong Pilipinas,” he said.
