Robin Padilla Defends Zubiri After Senator Says He Is Exhausted
Senator Robin Padilla defended Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri after Zubiri expressed exhaustion from his duties as a senator-judge in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
The Senate is currently scheduled to hold impeachment proceedings from Monday to Wednesday mornings, followed by regular plenary sessions in the afternoons. Padilla said the demanding schedule is not only tiring for Zubiri but also for other senators who are handling several responsibilities at the same time.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, September 2, Padilla said Zubiri’s remarks about being tired should not be treated as a simple complaint. He explained that Zubiri was only pointing out the difficulty of fitting several demanding tasks into a limited amount of time.
Padilla described Zubiri as a hardworking senator who is committed to his responsibilities. He also said that Zubiri is respected by his colleagues because of his experience, having previously served as Senate President and now serving as Senate Majority Leader.
According to Padilla, Zubiri remains dedicated to his work because of his commitment to the Filipino people and the country. He emphasized that while the workload may cause physical exhaustion, Zubiri continues to perform his duties.
The issue comes as the Senate prepares to manage both the impeachment trial and other major legislative work. Senate Presiding Officer Chiz Escudero said the chamber is considering holding full-day impeachment proceedings on selected dates in October.
The possible change in schedule is being considered because the Senate will also need to conduct plenary deliberations on the proposed 2027 national budget.
Senators are therefore expected to balance the impeachment proceedings with their regular legislative duties. The final schedule for the impeachment trial will still be determined by the Senate.
