Child Taken to School by Grandfather Dies After Jeepney Crash, Driver Allegedly Fell Asleep
A young boy died after a passenger jeepney crashed into the motorcycle he was riding with his younger sibling and grandfather in Virac, Catanduanes.
The nine-year-old boy was being taken to school by his grandfather when the accident happened in Barangay Vicente. Video footage from the area showed the jeepney traveling straight toward the motorcycle, which was stopped in front of a school.
The crash left the motorcycle riders injured. The victim suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital, but he did not survive. His five-year-old sibling and grandfather were also hurt and brought to a medical facility for treatment.
Initial police findings showed that the jeepney driver allegedly fell asleep while driving. This caused the vehicle to lose control and crash into the motorcycle.
Authorities arrested the driver as they continued their investigation into the accident. He may face charges related to the death of the young boy and the injuries suffered by the other victims.
The incident has raised concerns about the dangers of driving while tired, especially for public utility vehicle drivers who carry passengers on busy roads.
Another similar accident was also reported in Viga, Catanduanes. A driver of an L-300 closed van allegedly fell asleep while driving and crashed into a store.
Five people were injured in that separate incident. Among those hurt were two minors and a senior citizen.
The two accidents serve as a reminder of how dangerous it can be to drive when a person is too tired to stay alert. Losing focus for even a few seconds can lead to serious consequences, particularly on roads where pedestrians, motorcycles, and other vehicles are nearby.
