Homeowner Surprised After Large Mushrooms Suddenly Grow on Their Ceiling After Rainy Days
A homeowner was surprised to discover large mushrooms growing from the ceiling of their apartment in Baguio City after days of rain.
A lady netizen named Chloe Permalino found large mushrooms on the ceiling of their apartment after several days of continuous rain brought by the southwest monsoon.
Permalino had been away from their home in Manila since August 13, 2026. When she returned to Baguio on September 4, she was shocked to find mushrooms sprouting from the ceiling of the rental unit she was staying in.
The mushrooms were not the only sign of excessive moisture inside the apartment. Chloe also noticed that onions stored in the unit had started to sprout, while patches of mold had spread across parts of the walls.
These conditions suggested that the prolonged rainy weather had caused high levels of moisture to build up inside the home.
Experts explained that the mushrooms were identified as a type commonly known as Wood Ear Mushroom, or Kabuting Tenga ng Daga.
According to mycologist Dr. Renato Reyes, these fungi thrive in damp environments and require a high level of moisture to grow. Because of this, rainy periods often create ideal conditions for mushrooms to develop, especially in places where water can seep into walls, ceilings, and other parts of a building.
Some netizens shared similar experiences of dealing with mold, fungi, and moisture problems during long periods of rain.
Despite the mushroom being known as an edible variety, experts reminded the public not to pick and eat wild mushrooms without proper knowledge. Even edible species can become unsafe if they grow in contaminated areas or on materials that may contain harmful substances.
