South Korean Inmate Allegedly Planned Drone-Assisted Escape From New Bilibid Prison
A South Korean inmate allegedly prepared an unusual escape plan that involved the use of a large drone capable of carrying a person.
The inmate was identified as Park Wang-yeol, 47, was convicted in the Philippines for the killing of three fellow South Koreans.
Authorities and media reports indicated that he had been preparing the escape plan before he was temporarily sent back to South Korea in March to face a separate criminal case.
According to reports, the plan involved a heavy-lift drone that could carry up to 75 kilograms. Investigators learned that several test flights were reportedly conducted by individuals linked to Park.
The alleged scheme came to light after a video showing one of the test flights was discovered.
Reports suggested that a large amount of money was spent in preparation for the planned escape. The expenses reportedly included the purchase of the drone and other arrangements connected to the operation.
The plan allegedly involved attaching Park to the drone so he could be flown out of the prison facility.
Before considering the drone operation, Park was also reportedly linked to another escape idea involving an attack on a vehicle that would transport him from prison. Reports claimed that weapons had been acquired as part of that earlier plan.
Park was sentenced in 2022 to 60 years in prison for the deaths of three South Korean nationals whose bodies were found in a sugarcane field outside Bacolod City in 2016. Reports also stated that he had previously escaped from custody twice while being transported for court proceedings in 2017 and 2019.
In March, Park was temporarily repatriated to South Korea to face allegations related to the importation of 4.8 kilograms of methamphetamine.
South Korean media also reported that he allegedly had access to a private air-conditioned room, a television, and a mobile phone while detained at the New Bilibid Prison.
Authorities continue to examine the details surrounding the reported escape plot and related allegations.
