Philippine Embassy Warns Pinoys to Stop Cockfighting in France
COCKFIGHTING – The Philippine Embassy in France has issued a reminder to Filipinos after authorities raised concerns over illegal cockfighting and gambling activities.
The Philippine Embassy in France has urged Filipinos living in the country to immediately stop participating in cockfighting activities, reminding them that the practice is prohibited under French law and may be treated as animal cruelty.
The advisory came after the embassy was notified by French authorities about cockfighting and illegal gambling activities reportedly being organized or attended by Filipinos in France. Complaints involving disturbances and littering associated with these gatherings were also brought to the embassy’s attention.
“The Philippine Embassy wishes to inform the Filipino community that it has been alerted by the French authorities on illegal gambling and cockfighting activities being conducted by Filipinos in France. There have also been complaints about disturbances to the peace and littering in connection with such activities,” it said.
Cockfighting, widely known in the Philippines as sabong, traditionally involves two specially trained roosters being matched against each other. The birds may be fitted with sharp metal blades on their legs, while spectators commonly place bets on the outcome of the fight.
Although cockfighting has long been practiced as a traditional pastime in the Philippines, the embassy stressed that Filipinos must follow the laws of the country where they live and work.
Under French law, cockfighting is considered illegal and is classified as an act of animal cruelty. Individuals who violate the prohibition could face a prison sentence of up to three years and a fine reaching 45,000 euros.
The embassy’s warning also highlighted concerns beyond the cockfighting itself, particularly reports of illegal gambling, public disturbances and littering. These complaints prompted the diplomatic mission to remind the Filipino community to be mindful of how such activities may affect their relationship with their French neighbors and authorities.
“The Embassy further reminds Filipinos that living and working in France would entail respect for and observance of French laws. Let us maintain the good name and reputation of the Filipino community with our French hosts,” it added.
The Philippine Embassy encouraged Filipinos in France to observe local regulations and avoid activities that could result in criminal or financial penalties. The reminder serves as a call for members of the Filipino community to respect French laws while preserving positive relations with their host communities.
