Cebu City Government Cancels Grand Christmas Party This Year Due to Prepare for Super El Niño

The Cebu City government has decided to cancel its usual grand Christmas party this year as part of its efforts to reduce public spending and prepare for the expected effects of El Niño.

Instead of holding one large celebration for all city government employees, smaller gatherings will be allowed for each department. This move aims to help the local government save money while preparing for possible challenges brought by the weather phenomenon and the effects of recent disasters.

Mayor Nestor Archival explained that the decision was made to ensure that the city’s funds are used wisely. The government wants to prioritize other important needs, especially as the city prepares for possible water shortages and other problems that may come with El Niño.

In previous years, the annual citywide Christmas party reportedly cost around P4 million to P5 million. By changing the usual celebration, the city government hopes to reduce expenses without completely taking away the holiday spirit among its employees.

Under the new arrangement, each department will use its own budget to organize a simpler Christmas gathering. This will allow employees to celebrate the season with their co-workers without requiring the city to spend a large amount on one big event.

Despite the cancellation of the grand celebration, Archival assured city government employees that they will still receive their Christmas gifts.

The mayor also stressed the importance of being responsible when spending public funds. He said the city needs to make careful decisions and focus on projects and services that will benefit residents.

The move shows how local governments are adjusting their spending plans as they prepare for possible challenges in the coming months.
