Cops Arrest Man for Stealing 5 Bunches of Bananas to Buy Rice

A 23-year-old man was arrested after allegedly stealing five bunches of bananas worth around P6,000 in an attempt to buy rice for his wife, who had recently given birth.

The suspect, identified only as alias Mahar, was arrested by police following the incident in Sitio Busong, Barangay Colongulo, Surallah, South Cotabato. The theft reportedly happened on November 1, 2026, during the observance of All Saints’ Day, at around 2 p.m.

According to the suspect, he planned to sell the stolen bananas to earn money to buy rice for his family. He explained that his wife had recently given birth, and they had run out of food at home.

Two other alleged companions, identified as alias Rafael and Titom, reportedly took part in the incident but managed to escape. Authorities have yet to apprehend the two individuals.

Meanwhile, Mahar was taken into police custody and is currently detained at a police station in South Cotabato. He may face a theft charge in connection with the incident.

The incident has caught attention because of the suspect’s reported reason for stealing the bananas. While some may feel sympathy for his family’s difficult situation, others may point out that stealing remains a crime regardless of the circumstances.

The story also brings attention to the struggles faced by families who have difficulty providing even their basic needs, especially when welcoming a newborn child.

Although the suspect’s reported reason does not excuse the alleged crime, his story raises questions about poverty and the difficult choices some people make when they feel they have no other option.
