CCTV footage in the area captured the suspect approaching the 35-year-old victim from behind and repeatedly hacking her with a 13-inch knife. “Hindi niya namalayan na nandoon pala sa tabi naghihintay yung suspek at bigla siyang nilapitan at tinaga,” Malabon City Police Officer-in-Charge PCol. Kenneth Mission said. (She did not notice that the suspect was waiting nearby, and he suddenly approached and hacked her.)

The victim’s sister, Shiela Marie Sison, said the woman suffered deep wounds on her nape, as well as wounds on her back, arms and behind her ear. She underwent surgery and remains under observation by doctors.

Police said male residents caught the suspect while he was still holding the knife. A Peoples Taliba report said he was arrested in Barangay Potrero with the help of residents and barangay tanods, and that the bloodied weapon was recovered.

The suspect and the victim reportedly used to be friends but had a falling out over personal matters. Since then, the victim had allegedly been receiving threats from him.

In his statement, the suspect claimed he had long been mocked and threatened. “Basta matagal na po akong nagtitiis at saka nagtitimpi na rin po,” he said. (I have been enduring and holding back for a long time.) He added that he has no regrets and will not settle with the victim.

Sison denied the suspect’s claims and vowed to pursue justice for her sister. She also appealed to netizens to stop sharing the video of the attack.

Police said a frustrated murder complaint will be filed against the suspect, who remains in custody.
