Recently, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. appointed Dr. Beverly Lorraine Ho as the new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth). She will be bringing her extensive experience in public health, healthcare policy, and universal health care to the government-owned health insurer.
Ho succeeds then-PhilHealth acting president and CEO Dr. Edwin Mercado, who is now the new Secretary of the Department of Health (DOH).
Who is Ho?
She is a physician with a strong background in public health and government service. Before her new appointment, she served as chief health officer of Ayala Healthcare Holdings Inc., where she continued to work in the healthcare sector.
In the span of her career, she held several leadership positions at the DOH. It included serving as an undersecretary in 2022 and as an assistant secretary from January 2023 to January 2024. She also served as the department’s deputy spokesperson and previously led key offices, including the Health Promotion Bureau and Disease Prevention and Control Bureau.
Ho also served as special assistant to the health secretary for universal health coverage.
For her academic background, the records just highlighted her expertise in the field. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of the Philippines Manila and a Master in Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of the Philippines Diliman.
She was also able to earn recognitions, such as the Leadership Award in Public Health Practice from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2024 and the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award in 2022.
