The Chinese Embassy warns Filipino lawmakers.

Tensions between the Philippines and China have intensified after the Chinese Embassy in Manila issued a strong message to Filipino lawmakers.

The controversy began after Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan made remarks about the possibility of China using force against the Philippines, drawing criticism from Filipino lawmakers. The issue escalated when several lawmakers condemned the ambassador’s statements and called for him to be declared persona non grata.

In response, the Chinese Embassy in Manila posted a pointed message directed at the lawmakers, saying, “You are now on the list.”

The statement further fueled tensions between the two sides and raised concerns about diplomatic relations and respect for the Philippines’ sovereignty. The embassy also criticized Senator Risa Hontiveros, who filed a resolution seeking to declare Jing persona non grata, meaning an unwelcome foreign representative.

The Chinese Embassy did not explain what the “list” referred to, but its message was directed at House lawmakers who criticized the embassy’s remarks. These included Representatives Zia Alonto Adiong, Arlene “Kaka” Bag-ao, Perci Cendaña, Leila de Lima, Chel Diokno, Dadah Kiram Ismula, Cielo Krisel Lagman, Karl Legazpi, and Mark Anthony Santos.

In response, Akbayan lawmakers, including Cendaña, Diokno, and Ismula, said they would not be intimidated by the embassy’s statement. They also reaffirmed their commitment to defending the Philippines’ sovereignty, rights, and national integrity.

Adiong said the embassy’s “list” refers to those who oppose what he described as China’s pattern of intimidation, aggression, and disrespect. He added that he was proud to be included, saying, “Then yes, I am proud to be on it. Hindi lang pala sa West Philippine Sea ang panggigipit ng Tsina — pati na rin sa larangan ng diplomasya. Buong tapang ko itong tinututulan.”

The latest exchange fueled the existing tensions between the Philippines and China, particularly over competing claims and maritime activities in the West Philippine Sea.

Although the Philippines and China maintain diplomatic relations, the exchange has raised concerns about respect between the two countries.
