DepEd Requests ₱975.96 Billion for 2027 Budget Amid Push for Bigger Education Funding
DEPED – A nearly ₱1 trillion budget request from the Department of Education (DepEd) is now being presented before the House of Representatives for the 2027 fiscal year.
The Department of Education has formally requested a proposed budget allocation of ₱975.96 billion for Fiscal Year 2027 from the House of Representatives.
The proposed funding was presented during the House session on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, with House Committee on Appropriations Vice Chairperson and Davao de Oro 1st District Representative Maria Carmen Zamora sponsoring the education department’s proposed budget for the coming year.
During her presentation, Zamora outlined the amount DepEd and its attached agencies are seeking.
“The Department of Education, including its attached agencies, is proposed to receive an allocation of ₱975.96 billion,” she said.
Aside from the proposed allocation for DepEd, Zamora also mentioned a separate request of ₱973.4 billion intended for the Retirement and Life Insurance Premiums of the department’s Office of the Secretary.
“Including retirement and life insurance premiums broken down to approximately ₱973.4 billion for the Office of the Secretary,” Zamora added.
She further explained that DepEd is seeking a combined ₱2.56 billion for six agencies attached to the department. These include the National Academy of Sports (NAS), National Book Development Board (NBDP), National Council for Children Television (NCCT), National Museum of the Philippines (NMP-DepEd), Teacher Education Council, and Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA).
“₱2.56 billion distributed among six attached agencies: the National Academy of Sports, the National Book Development Board, the National Council for Children Television, the National Museum of the Philippines, the Teacher Education Council, and the Philippine High School for the Arts,” she said.
According to Zamora, the proposed allocations discussed during the session would represent 13.55% of the ₱7.2 trillion national budget proposed for 2027.
She emphasized the importance of substantial funding for the education sector, noting that the Constitution mandates prioritizing education in the national budget.
Zamora also stressed that government spending on education should not simply be viewed as an expense. Instead, she urged lawmakers and the administration to recognize education funding as a long-term investment in the country.
“Once again, the single largest allocation of any department in government as part of the education sector is consistent with the mandate of the Constitution. It appears that this House and this administration continue to treat education not as an expense but as the nation’s most important investment,” she concluded.
