DSWD on Full Alert as Typhoon Saudel May Strengthen Habagat

DSWD is now on full alert as the agency prepares for the possible effects of Typhoon Saudel, which may enter PAR next week.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao has placed its Quick Response Teams on full alert. Both the central and field offices are on standby, along with specialized equipment that may be needed for emergency operations

The agency is closely monitoring weather developments to ensure that assistance can be delivered quickly if needed.

The DSWD has pre-positioned more than 3.8 million family food packs across the country as part of its preparedness efforts. The agency also has P715.25 million in quick response funds available for disaster-related assistance.

The department continues to provide aid to families affected by previous weather disturbances. Based on data from the Disaster Response Operations Management, Information and Communication (DROMIC), more than 2 million families nationwide have already received humanitarian assistance worth over P1 billion.

The bureau is also coordinating with churches and social action centers that can serve as additional distribution points for family food packs.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said Typhoon Saudel remains outside PAR but may enter the country’s monitoring area on Monday (August 24, 2026). Once inside PAR, it will be given the local name Obet.

As of early Saturday morning (August 22), Saudel was located far east of Northern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 160 kilometers per hour.

While the typhoon is not expected to make landfall, forecasters said it may strengthen the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

Cloudy skies and increased rainfall are expected in parts of Luzon, Metro Manila, MIMAROPA, CALABARZON, and Western Visayas by the middle of next week.
