Foreign Tourists Join Traditional Fishing Activity in Palawan
Two foreign tourists have joined the traditional fishing activity in San Vicente, Palawan and received share of the catch.
The tourists from France ad a memorable experience after joining locals in a traditional way of catching fish known as “keger.”
Early in the morning, while the sea was still calm, local fishermen and residents worked together to push a boat into the water.
Once offshore, they carefully laid out a long fishing net, stretching up to 300 meters, forming a wide circle before bringing it back toward the shore. From there, the real effort began as people on land pulled the net together.
The process of keger requires teamwork and strength. Men and women alike take part, pulling the net with all their energy. Some even tie parts of the net around their waist to add more force.
The activity can take more than two hours, so having more people helps speed up the process.
The two tourists noticed the locals working together and decided to join in. Although it was their first time trying such an activity, they willingly helped pull the net along with everyone else.
Their participation showed not just curiosity, but also appreciation for local culture. When the net finally reached the shore, it revealed a mix of fish such as liwit and sapsap. The catch was then shared among those who took part in the activity.
Eventually, the tourists joined in, they were also given their share of the fish. Beyond the fun and excitement, the experience gave the visitors a deeper understanding of local traditions.
“It’s very good to be part of this traditional experience. To do something cultural is also better than to just be a tourist,” one of the tourists said.
