Luanne Lim, executive director and chief executive officer of HSBC Hong Kong, has been appointed as executive director and chief executive of Hang Seng Bank from October 2025, subject to regulatory approval.
Lim, who has been in her current position at HSBC since February 2022 and has worked at the London-headquartered bank for several decades across Asia, will also take up the positions of the chairman of the operating committee and a member of the nomination committee at Hang Seng Bank.
Lim is replacing Diana Cesar who is stepping down as executive director and chief executive of Hang Seng Bank. She had been assigned the role in September 2021, after previously being CEO of HSBC Hong Kong.
Cesar is set to return to HSBC as vice chairman, Hong Kong, advising the co-CEOs of Asia and Middle East, HSBC in October 2025.
Cesar will also cease to be Hang Seng’s chairman of the operating committee and a member of the nomination committee of the Bank. In a Hang Seng Bank announcement released on September 4, Cesar said that she “has no disagreement with the board and that she is not aware of any matter relating to her stepping down from the board that needs to be brought to the attention of the shareholders of the bank.”
In the announcement, the board said that it would like to thank Cesar for her “outstanding contributions, dynamic leadership and unwavering dedication to the customers, staff and shareholders of the bank during her tenure and wishes her all the best.” The board also welcomed Lim to the board and said “they look forward to working closely with her”.
The moves are subject to regulatory approval. Hang Seng Bank is a Hong Kong bank that is 64% majority owned by HSBC; the bank made some job cuts earlier this year.
Replacing Lim as HSBC Hong Kong CEO will be Maggie Ng, who is set to take on the role in addition to her current role as head of retail banking & wealth, HSBC Hong Kong. This will also be effective in October 2025, subject to regulatory approval, according to a media release from HSBC.
Ng joined HSBC in 2020 as the head of wealth and personal banking, Hong Kong. Ng has 20 years’ experience in the finance industry. She will work closely with the other members of the HSBC Hong Kong operating committee, according to a HSBC media release.
David Liao, co-chief executive, Asia and Middle East, HSBC, thanked the trio and said: “We are already the market leader in Hong Kong, and have substantial further opportunities to invest and grow. Both HSBC Hong Kong and Hang Seng Bank have vital roles to play in this. Diana, Luanne and Maggie will all continue to play an important part in delivering growth in our key home market of Hong Kong.”
