Nixie the Burned Kitten Dies as Animal Welfare Group Vows to Seek Justice
KITTEN – Nixie, the kitten who suffered devastating burns after allegedly being set on fire for clout, has died, leaving animal welfare advocates mourning his loss.
“Rest now, little one.”
A kitten that was allegedly burned alive by a group of young men in Cabuyao, Laguna, reportedly as a way to gain attention on social media, has died from the severe injuries he suffered during the cruel incident.
The Bataan Animal Welfare Society (BAWS) announced on Tuesday, September 1, that Nixie, the kitten rescued after the incident, had succumbed to his injuries despite receiving medical treatment and care.
After learning about what happened, BAWS immediately rescued Nixie and brought him to a veterinary clinic. The kitten had sustained third-degree burns and other serious injuries after allegedly being set on fire.
According to the animal welfare organization, Nixie was taken to the veterinary clinic “almost every day” as medical professionals attempted to manage his condition and help him recover.
However, Nixie’s condition eventually deteriorated. He was brought to the veterinarian for the final time after his body temperature dropped. Several hours later, the kitten passed away.
Following his death, BAWS expressed grief over the loss and promised to pursue the “justice” they believe Nixie deserves.
“Before the world ever hurt him, there was the warmth of her body curled around his. The warmth of milk. The quiet comfort of being small, safe, and loved. In those first days of his life, warmth meant home. Then warmth betrayed him. It came to him as fire,” the organization said.
“It wrapped around his tiny body, not to keep him alive, but to make him suffer. The warmth that should have comforted became something cruel. Something that burned through his fragile skin and left wounds far deeper than the ones we could see,” BAWS added.
The group also shared a heartbreaking tribute from Nixie’s caregiver, who looked after him following his rescue.
The caregiver acknowledged that they understood from the beginning that Nixie might not survive because of the extent of his injuries. Still, his passing was “extremely painful.”
“From the very beginning, we knew that with your tiny body and the severe burns covering almost all of you, you might only have a few days with us. Still, we hoped,” the caregiver said.
“We hoped that with every gentle touch, every treatment, and every moment you chose to eat and drink, your tiny body was choosing to fight,” they added.
The caregiver said they wanted Nixie to “know a life beyond” the suffering inflicted upon him.
“But your tiny body had already carried so much. You were so small. And you were so tired,” the carer added.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 23, when Nixie was allegedly doused with alcohol and set on fire by several young men. The individuals reportedly admitted that they did it for clout and claimed they were intoxicated at the time.
Although Nixie was later doused with water, he had already suffered devastating burns. BAWS provided him with veterinary treatment, food intended to support his recovery, and water.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) condemned the incident and emphasized that animal cruelty is prohibited under Philippine law.
Under the Animal Welfare Act, it is “unlawful for any person to torture any animal” and “to neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat any animal,” among other prohibited acts.
The law likewise prohibits cruelty, including torturing, beating, and mutilating animals. BAWS has vowed to remember Nixie and continue seeking accountability for the suffering inflicted upon him.
