Man Arrested for Stealing Corned Beef at Convenience Store in Manila
A man was arrested after stealing a canned meat and punching a convenience store manager in Paco, Manila.
The police authorities arrested a 39-year-old man after allegedly stealing a can of corned beef from a convenience store and punching the store manager who chased him. The incident happened at the corner of Pedro Gil Street and Main Street in Barangay 813.
“Itong suspect ay pumasok sa isang convenience store tapos may kinuha siyang de-lata na nagkakahalaga ng P378… Pagkalabas ng suspek, hinabol siya nitong store manager tapos nasukol siya doon sa Onyx Street. Noong kinompronta siya ng store manager, bigla na lang siyang sinuntok ng suspect,” Police Captain Renny Rogero said.
CCTV footage showed the suspect calmly walking away from the convenience store after taking the canned food. He reportedly passed near a police assistance desk in the area without showing signs of panic.
The store manager soon noticed the theft and chased the man. The pursuit continued until the suspect was cornered along Onyx Street.
When the manager confronted him, the suspect allegedly punched him in the face. The manager suffered swelling on the right side of his face and was brought to a hospital for medical treatment.
The stolen can of corned beef, reportedly worth P378, was recovered by the manager. He then returned to the convenience store and reported the incident to police.
Officers from the San Andres Bukid Police Community Precinct later conducted a follow-up operation and arrested the suspect along Onyx Street.
While in police custody, the man admitted taking the canned food. He reportedly explained that he was hungry and took it on impulse. He also claimed that he only punched the manager after being hit first, although authorities were still checking the details of his statement.

The suspect expressed regret and apologized for the incident. A barangay official also said the store manager had been working in the area for a long time and was known as a kind person. The official added that the suspect was not a resident of Barangay 813 and had no known barangay record there.
The suspect remains detained at the Sta. Ana Police Station while authorities process the case. He is facing complaints for theft and physical injuries.
