Update on Impeachment Moves vs. Marcos Jr. after Filing of 2 Impeach Complaints

MARCOS JR. – The one-year ban on the filing of impeachment complaints against the President officially starts after the House of Representatives referred two (2) impeach raps to the chamber’s Committee on Justice.

Recently, the second impeachment complaint against Pres. Bongbong Marcos was filed before the Office of the Secretary General of the House of Representatives. It was filed by the Makabayan bloc.

The first impeachment rap against the President was filed last January 19. It was penned by lawyer Andre de Jesus and endorsed by Deputy Minority Leader at Pusong Pinoy Party-list Rep. Jett Nisay. Marcos Jr. is accused of alleged betrayal of public trust.

Several grounds were cited in the first impeachment complaint against the President. The chamber immediately referred the impeachment rap to the House Committee on Justice.

Here are the grounds cited over the alleged betrayal of public trust in the first impeachment complaint filed against Marcos Jr.:

  • Respondent ordered and enabled the kidnapping and surrender of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
  • Respondent is unfit to serve as President due to drug addiction.
  • Respondent committed betrayal of public trust when he failed to veto unprogrammed appropriations (UA) and other unconstitutional provisions in the General Appropriations Bill (GAB).
  • Respondent engaged in graft and corruption through kickbacks and ghost projects.
  • Respondent created the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) to shield corrupt allies.
  • Respondent violated the Constitution and betrayed public trust by surrendering former President Duterte to the ICC.

Based on a report on GMA News, the House of Representatives has already referred the two (2) impeachment complaints against Marcos Jr. to the House Committee on Justice. Now, the one-year constitutional ban on the filing of an impeachment rap against the President has officially started until January 26, 2027.

Based on the report, the second impeachment complaint filed against the President was endorsed by party-list opposition lawmakers Antonio Tinio of ACT Teachers, Sarah Elago of Gabriela and Renee Co of Kabataan party-list.

Amid the impeachment moves against the President, a lawmaker previously claimed that House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos supposedly has no choice but to process the impeachment complaints against his father. The Ilocos Norte Congressman vowed that the House will act on any impeachment complaint even against his father.

Recently, Ilocos Norte Cong. Sandro Marcos announced that he will step back from participating in the House process of the impeachment complaint against his father.
