What triggered the Nepal flash flood? Here’s an update so far.
NEPAL FLASH FLOOD – The August 26 tragedy killed dozens and left hundreds missing as rescue efforts and investigations continue.
As of the latest, hundreds of people were already reported to be dead, and thousands were missing following the catastrophic flash flooding that hit China and Nepal on Wednesday. The disaster destroyed homes, swamped roads, and swept away bridges.
How did this deadly incident that hit the Nepal-Tibet border unfold?
According to reports, the deadly disaster was triggered by a massive glacial collapse in Nepal’s Langtang National Park. The collapse sent a powerful torrent of water, mud, rocks, and ice through nearby valleys, destroying villages and trapping thousands of residents and tourists.
The event was initially mistaken for an earthquake after the US Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 5.2 tremor. The powerful surge destroyed homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, and communication lines, leaving several communities cut off and devastated.
The collapse reportedly blocked part of the Lhende River, creating a temporary natural barrier. As water accumulated behind the blockage, the barrier eventually failed, releasing a huge volume of water and debris downstream.
The disaster became even more destructive because of the mountainous terrain. The region’s narrow valleys can funnel large amounts of water and debris, allowing a sudden release upstream to move rapidly toward populated areas.
Meanwhile, as of the latest update, rescue operations continue. Thousands of police personnel have been involved in search-and-rescue operations. Helicopters are being used to evacuate survivors and deliver food, medicine, and other emergency supplies to communities cut off by the flooding.
Rescue efforts continue despite the extreme challenges and obstacles brought by damaged roads, high river levels, thick mud, and mountainous terrain.
