Priest Walks Away From Bishop Post Citing Personal Limitations
BISHOP – Just weeks before his ordination, a priest appointed as bishop made a move that few expected.
A priest chosen to lead the Diocese of Tagbilaran has declined the appointment, citing personal discernment and a reconsideration of his readiness for the role.
Fr. Gerardo Saco, who currently serves as the diocese administrator, was appointed last month as the eighth bishop of Tagbilaran by Pope Leo XIV. His episcopal ordination had been scheduled for May 26, 2026. However, in a statement released on Tuesday, May 5, Saco revealed that he would no longer proceed with the ordination after experiencing a “change of heart.”
“I sincerely ask for your understanding regarding this change of heart. It comes from a deep awareness of my own human limitations and inadequacies,” Saco wrote, expressing humility in his decision.
Despite stepping away from the episcopal role, Saco emphasized his ongoing dedication to his priestly vocation and to the faithful. “Please be assured of my continued commitment as a priest, to journey with you in faith in the Risen Lord, who never abandons us in moments of trial and need,” he added.
The development was formally acknowledged by Cebu Archbishop Abet Uy, who previously served as bishop of Tagbilaran. According to Uy, the decision was communicated to the Vatican and accepted by Pope Leo XIV.
“The Papal Nuncio has informed me that the Holy Father has accepted his decision. This development has brought sadness to many of us, especially the faithful of the Diocese of Tagbilaran,” Uy said in a statement.
“Nevertheless, we respect Fr. Saco’s decision, trusting that it was made after deep and prayerful discernment,” he added, urging the faithful to remain understanding and supportive.
Saco’s withdrawal means that the Diocese of Tagbilaran will continue to remain without a bishop, extending its vacancy to eight months. The diocese has been without a permanent head since September 2025, when Uy was appointed as the new Archbishop of Cebu.
As the Church awaits the appointment of a new bishop, the faithful are encouraged to remain united in prayer and trust in the discernment process guiding future leadership.
