Outrage Erupts Over Viral Lupang Hinirang Remix Clip
LUPANG HINIRANG – A viral video featuring a remixed version of Lupang Hinirang has ignited intense discussions among Filipino netizens.
A remix version of the Philippine national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, has sparked widespread criticism online after a viral video showed a group of individuals dancing along to its altered beat. The clip quickly went viral on social media, drawing mixed reactions from Filipino netizens, many of whom questioned whether the act crossed the line from creativity to disrespect.
In the now-viral video uploaded by a TikTok user known as Rice Cube, the anthem could be heard with a noticeably different sound. Instead of its traditional solemn tone, the music appeared to have been remixed, changing its rhythm and overall dynamics. The people in the video were seen cheerfully swaying to the tune, which further fueled the debate among viewers.
Rice Cube clarified the intent behind the video, emphasizing that it was not meant to offend. “No disrespect to Lupang Hinirang or the Philippines…This was shared in a space for Filipinos and Filipino Americans as a form of creative expression. With respect always,” can be read in his statement.
Despite this explanation, the video received a wave of criticism from netizens who expressed concern over the appropriateness of remixing the national anthem. Some comments included: “Saya now kaso later”, “May kaso yan if I’m not mistaken”, “may mga pinagaralan ba mga to?”, “na para bang line of 5 sila sa gmrc”, “Seryoso na kung seryoso. tulad ng ibang comments na seryoso kuno. pero d tlga nakakatuwa.”, and “this is so alarming”.
The issue also brought attention to Republic Act No. 8491, which outlines proper conduct regarding the national flag and anthem. Under Section 43 of the law, the national anthem must not be performed for “recreation” or “entertainment purposes,” except in specific, sanctioned events.
“As a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention and face the National Flag, if there is one displayed, and if there is none, they shall face the band or the conductor. At the first note, all persons shall execute a salute by placing their right palms over their chests. Those in military, scouting, citizen’s military training and security guard uniforms shall give the salute prescribed by their regulations. The salute shall be completed upon the last note of the National Anthem,” can be read in the legal document.
“When the National Anthem is to be played or sung with the Anthem of any other country, the National Anthem shall be sung first. The National Anthem shall not be played or sung for mere recreation, amusement or entertainment purposes except on the following occasions: International competitions where the Philippines is the host or has a representative; National or local competitions; During the ‘signing of’ and ‘signing on’ of radio broadcasting and television stations; Before the initial and last screening of films or before the opening of theater performances; Civic activities, cultural shows or presentations; at Other occasions as may be allowed by the Institute,” in addition to this.
As of writing, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines has yet to release an official statement regarding the controversy.
