Senior Citizen Farmer Loses His Like While Waiting for Financial Aid

A senior citizen farmer passed away before receiving the financial assistance he had long been waiting for from the government.

The 67-year-old  victim was a senior citizen and corn farmer from Barangay Anquiray in Amulung, Cagayan. He reportedly died while waiting in line for the payout of the Emergency Cash Transfer program at the Capitol Gymnasium in Tuguegarao City on May 22.

According to his family, they left home before dawn to make sure they could arrive early at the venue where aid was being distributed to farmers affected by the severe drought in the province. They reached the gymnasium around 6 in the morning.

Because they were in a hurry to travel, the elderly farmer was no longer able to eat breakfast before leaving home. As the hours passed and the heat became more intense, he reportedly decided to look for food nearby.

However, while walking under the scorching sun, he suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. Authorities monitored a heat index of around 45 degrees Celsius in Tuguegarao City that day. The victim was believed to have suffered from heat stroke caused by the extreme temperature.

He was immediately rushed to the Cagayan Valley Medical Center for treatment, but doctors later declared him dead on arrival.

His family shared that he had been eagerly waiting for the government assistance because it would have greatly helped them recover from the losses caused by the drought. The farmer was supposed to receive P10,125 under the Emergency Cash Transfer program for affected corn farmers in Cagayan.

The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office expressed sympathy to the grieving family and immediately extended initial assistance. Officials also assured the family that the financial aid intended for the victim would still be processed and released to help support them during this difficult time.
