A police officer who lost his hand after being attacked by a man with machete is now recovering after doctors successfully reattached the severed limb.

According to reports, officers were called to the area after receiving information about a man causing trouble. Upon arriving at the scene, they tried to calm the situation and peacefully approach the suspect. However, the man suddenly attacked Miraña with the bladed weapon.

The officer sustained severe injuries during the assault, including the loss of his left hand. Fellow policemen immediately intervened and shot the suspect in the leg to stop the attack and prevent further harm.

Miraña was rushed to the hospital, where medical specialists worked for hours to save and reattach his hand. The procedure was successful, including the reconnection of major arteries. Doctors continue to monitor his condition, and he is expected to undergo another operation as part of his recovery.

The Philippine National Police expressed hope that movement and function in the officer’s hand can be restored as he continues to heal. Authorities also assured him and his family that assistance and support will be provided throughout his recovery.

PNP studies the possible acquisition of additional non-lethal equipment for officers in the field. The move is aimed at improving police response during dangerous situations while reducing the need for deadly force whenever possible.

Under the force’s continuum being followed by the police, officers are trained to begin with their presence and verbal commands before moving to non-lethal options such as batons and tasers. The use of firearms remains a last resort when lives are at risk.
